Bill looked at John. “You two don’t look like brothers.”

John said, “We’re not. It’s just easier for him to call him that. Fact is, most of the kids he meets wind up calling him that. Who would have thought, my buddy the confirmed bachelor, turns out to be good with kids.”

The boys got back with the plates, and Gus doing his best to keep up. John asked, “Hear any more about whether we’re pulling out tomorrow?”

I replied, “I haven’t, but I’ve been nervous as a cat on a hot tin roof all week, there must be something we need to be doing, and Veronica’s new system is the only thing I’ve heard about.”

“Every bot on my crew would tell me I was crazy, if I didn’t go along.”

I said, “Two carriers ought to be able to take care of whatever is out there, or we’re going to be running back with our tails between our legs, anyway. You and the Aldrin can stay and help Diego and the Conrad picket the planet, if you have something you need to take care of here.”

“You are going to need some medical knowledge, before it’s over. Even if it’s just to figure out what those folks used to look like.”

“I’ll tell you I’d rather have you along. Right now, we don’t know if those people were killed, or died of the Polka-Dot Plague.”

“Count me in, then. Even Richard knows enough about autodocs to get Bill set up. I don’t need to hang around for that.”

“What if he has something else going on, that he’s been hiding from us?”

“I’ve put Dr. Brooks through every course there is on how to set up an autodoc. No sweat.”

A thought crossed my mind. After I moved all the meat to the plates the boys had brought out, I pulled out my comm, and called Jeff. “Yes, Admiral?”

“I just wanted to make sure you were notified that we expect to pull out tomorrow evening.”

“I was. Which ships will be going?”

“The Cernan, the Armstrong, and the Aldrin, plus their support.”

“The Conrad is on picket duty?”

“Yes. Zoom is fixing up the old pirate family base on the moon, as a support facility. I’d rather she finished it, and got it staffed, than leave it half-finished, and have to evict squatters when we get back.”

“Sounds like a reasonable plan. Do we know what we’re heading into, yet?”

“We do not. Do you have access to Veronica’s report?”

“I’ve heard her first impressions, but if she’s had any more to say, I’m not aware of it.”

“That’s all I have. Do you have any thoughts?”

“If they died of disease, we might be better off to leave them alone. If they were destroyed by an outside force, we need to know as much as we can, so that we can avoid whoever it was. No need to start a war if we don’t have to.”

“I was hoping you had some insight I had looked over, Jeff. You don’t sound like you’ve thought of any possibilities that I hadn’t.
